Slip gauges, also known as gauge blocks or Jo blocks, are precision-engineered blocks made of high-grade steel or ceramic, used as the primary standards for length measurements in metrology. They feature two flat, parallel measuring faces that allow them to be "wrung" together to build specific dimension stacks for calibrating measuring instruments or setting machine tools.

- These blocks come in sets (e.g., 81, 103, or 112 pieces) designed to combine mathematically to form almost any desired dimension in increments of 0.001 mm.
- The sets are arranged to minimize the number of blocks required for any single stack, reducing cumulative error.
Working / Process
1. Preparation and Cleaning
- Surfaces must be cleaned with a lint-free cloth or chamois leather soaked in solvent to remove dust, grit, or excessive oil.
- Inspect the faces for burrs or scratches using a magnifying glass; any defect will prevent proper wringing.
2. The Wringing Process
- Place the edge of one gauge block at a right angle to the other.
- Apply light pressure while sliding the blocks together and rotating them into alignment until they stick firmly.

3. Building a Stack
- Select the largest block first to minimize the number of components in the stack.
- Choose subsequent blocks to subtract the decimal places until the target dimension is achieved.
- Avoid using more than 4 or 5 blocks in a single stack to keep measurement uncertainty within limits.
